What are some big shady trees that can survive in arid, dry soil.?

What are some big shady trees that can survive in arid, hard, soil ? The soil suck sucks soo much, if a gather some in a pot and pour some water it only goes like an inch or less deep and doesn't retain it well. Yet my big backyard is covered with this soil and is so sunny out.
