Do ferrets really smell?

I really want to get a pet ferret because I think they are so cute, but everyone keeps telling me that they are too smelly. Can anyone with firsthand experience tell me the truth?! Can they be litter trained, do they bite? And anything else that I might want to know before getting a ferret as a pet? Thanks!
