Was I really out of line for this?

You had the best of intentions, but you really had no place and no business to confront this woman at all. This woman, even though she reacted harshly to you, she was justified in doing so, it is none of your business and she does'nt pay you to give her advice. The best thing you can do is no longer babysit for her. the damage has already been done.
